Chiropractic Care Scores a Big Knockout with Headaches

In the July 2017 BioMed Central Research Note researchers from Norway report on the results of the trial comparing the us of pain medication, chiropractic and a placebo group. Over the 12 months of follow-up, the group that received the chiropractic adjustment scored a 59% decrease in the headache index (frequency x duration x intensity) as compared to a 9.9% increase in the headache index for the control/drug group. A huge win by any measurement.

This corresponds to several studies that have found the same results:

o Headache intensity was decrease by 36% post treatment

o Number of headache hours per day decreased by 69%

o 71% of the participants had a greater than 50% reduction in headache frequency

o 33% had 100% improvement (no more headaches)

o Headache intensity reduced by 43% at one month

o Headache intensity reduced by 40% at six months

o Headache frequency reduced by 49% at one month

o Headache frequency reduced by 52% at six months

o Headache intensity reduced by 40% at six months

o Headache frequency reduced by 52% at six months

How chiropractic care works is that the nerves that exit the top of the neck are a major causative factor in headaches. These nerves exit around and about the first and second bones in the neck and go up the head innervating many of the tissues and blood vessels in the head. When these nerves are compromised by the misalignment of these bones, the nerves can be irritated and muscles around the spinal bones tighten and irritate or pinch the nerves and headaches soon follow.

In my Boston office, we have had and continue to have hundreds of patients who have had success with chiropractic helping them decrease the intensity, frequency and duration of headaches, if not get rid of them completely. “I was majoring in chemistry at Villanova University when my path turned to chiropractic. I was going on interviews to be a pharmaceutical sales representative, and they always asked me what I wanted to be doing in five years. My answer was always the same: “I want to be helping people, enjoying my work, while making a difference.”

Whiplash: Real Injury or Legal Myth? What Attorneys Need to Know About the Evolving Science

For decades, few injuries have generated as much controversy in personal injury litigation as whiplash. Defense experts have questioned its legitimacy, insurers have challenged its severity, and juries have often struggled with claims involving persistent symptoms despite normal imaging studies. Yet modern research increasingly supports the conclusion that whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) are legitimate injuries with identifiable biomechanical and neurophysiological mechanisms.

Whiplash Cases and the Missing Injury

For decades, whiplash injury cases have presented a challenge for personal injury attorneys. Clients often report significant neck pain following a motor vehicle collision, yet conventional imaging studies frequently fail to identify a clear source of the symptoms. Defense experts may argue that the absence of MRI or CT findings suggests a minor injury or no injury at all.

Research by Dr. Nikolai Bogduk, widely considered the leading anatomical researcher, helped change that conversation.
